Many students are aware that the Information Pack has a suggested structure for the report. They know this is very important but are confused on its exact meaning. In this article, we share what is really needed in Part 1.

The following structure is following the main points of the Information Pack.

Project Objectives and Overall Research Approach (900 to 1000 words)

Things to consider in this part:

Reasons for choosing the project topic area and the target organization

  • You may want to discuss why the topic area appeals to you. Perhaps it is relevant to your current job scope or your intended area of work. Perhaps you possess the skills and knowledge to conduct research most effectively in this area.
  • Why have you chosen your target organization? Perhaps the organization is a leader in the industry and can provide much learning. You may also want to consider if reliable public information is most easily available.

Research objectives and questions

  • The research objectives are what you mainly wish to achieve. In essence, this is already decided by your Project Title. For example, if you chose Topic 8, your objective is to evaluate the business and financial performance of the firm.
  • The research questions goes into more detail and shows the specific areas you wish to research. Usually, you will have 3 to 4 questions. So if you chose Topic 8, how will you evaluate the business performance of the firm? There are many ways evaluate business performance and your research question will show which ways you are focusing on.

For example, if your research question is “What is the state of the industry that ABC  company is in?”  This will show the reader that you will be looking at the industry so as to evaluate business performance.
  • Do note that your research questions should be fully answered by the end of Part 3. In the “Conclusion” section of Part 3, you will summarize your answers to those research questions. Avoid setting questions here that might be difficult to answer. An example of a question that might be difficult to answer might be “Was Company ABC successful in achieving its short and long-term corporate objectives?”

Overall research approach

  • This is a summary of the approach you will take to conduct your research and provide answers to the research questions you have set earlier. You should discuss the following:
    • How you plan to collect information – will you use primary or secondary information? This should be done briefly. You will go into more detail in Part 2.
  • How you plan to analyze this information. You should introduce the models you plan to use, and how each model complements the other to provide a fuller picture that will answer your research questions.
